Living Together
Between 1996 and 2004 the number of cohabiting couple families increased by over 50 per cent to 2.2 million. The number of cohabiting couples is projected to almost double to 3.8 million by 2031.
Many people falsely believe there is something called ‘common law marriage’ which gives cohabiting couples the same rights as married ones. This misconception can lead to difficulties if your relationship breaks down. We can help you resolve financial issues if your cohabiting relationship breaks down.
We can also help you to draw up a Living Together Agreement to regulate your rights and obligations to each other and set out clear arrangements about your property or property bought with joint funds. This may include a declaration as to the assets that are in the relationship and their ownership, a declaration of how future assets are to be dealt with, what happens on the death of you or your partner and what happens if a child is born.
We also offer advice on the Civil Partnership Act for same-sex couples wishing to register their partnership in a formal civil ceremony.
