Euro 2008 celebrations kicked off in earnest by LYP
Release date: 27/05/2008
The official start of Euro 2008 may still be a few weeks away, but networking group Leicester Young Professionals kicked off its own soccer tournament in style.
There was no diving and no offside as around 60 competitors descended on Leicester's Time Bar, for a frenzied table-football championship.
Participants were split into teams of two or three with each adopting a European footballing nation to represent. Following a knockout tournament, Italy went head-to-head with Spain in the final, for the coveted Thornton's LYP chocolate trophy.
But it was Italy - represented by Matthew Duckworth, of Harvey Ingram, and Richard Borrington, of Boolers Pensions & Investments - that prevailed over Spain with an emphatic 8-3 scoreline. Spain was represented by Ryan Holden, of MDA Consulting, and Wes Scales, of Mark J Rees.
Mustafizur Sheikh, of HBJ Gateley Waring, won a guided-tour for four of the Walkers Stadium, in the LYP business card lucky dip competition.
Event Co-ordinator Gayle Folkard, a trainee solicitor at Harvey Ingram, said: "There was a fantastic atmosphere on the night and the noise inside the venue was absolutely incredible. We had a great turnout with loads of enthusiastic support. It was a superb evening and among the best events the LYP has organised. Id like to thank PKF (UK) LLP for supplying the football tables on the night."
LYP is now in its sixth year and membership is continuing to grow. The group's next event is a slap-up breakfast meeting at Revolution, in New Walk, Leicester, on July 10. For more details simply e-mail Daljit Flora on daljit.flora@harveyingram.com
