Government to review unfair dismissal qualifying period

Bookmark and Share Employment Law - Harvey Ingram Employment Law

Lord Young, the former Cabinet Minister, appointed by David Cameron to slash red tape for small business, has confirmed that the government is actively considering increasing the period of time employees must have worked for an employer before they can bring a claim for unfair dismissal - from one year to two.

This may be good news for business but bad news for employees. Employers could still face allegations of discrimination or other claims where no qualifying period is required.

It is suggested that this may apply to small businesses only but details of the proposal have yet to be revealed. A consultation about Lord Young's proposals is likely to follow but the Government has set no timetable for a decision on this issue.
